Description

Symbolism of the Kalash

The Pot
  • The pot itself symbolizes the universe. Its round shape represents the earth, while the empty space within signifies the sky or ether.
  • The material of the pot, whether brass, copper, or clay, represents purity and is chosen based on regional customs and the specific deity being worshipped.

Water Inside the Pot
  • Water, an essential component of the Kalash, symbolizes life and sustenance. It is considered the source of all creation and is often mixed with sacred substances like Ganga Jal (water from the Ganges), turmeric, and sandalwood paste to enhance its sanctity.

Mango Leaves
  • The mango leaves placed at the mouth of the pot symbolize the presence of the divine.
  • They are arranged in a way that they touch the water inside, representing the flow of divine energy and blessings into the home or place of worship.

Coconut
  • The coconut placed atop the Kalash is a symbol of fertility, prosperity, and auspiciousness. It is often tied with a red or yellow thread, signifying the sacredness of the ritual.
  • The three eyes of the coconut are said to represent the three eyes of Lord Shiva, symbolizing vision and wisdom.
